Ian Gilbert

My research interests are in the design and synthesis of potential drugs and in particular we are pursuing targets in the areas of Tropical Medicine (African sleeping sickness, Chagas' disese, leishmaniasis and malaria). The main areas of work concern inhibition of steroid biosynthesis, selective delivery of compounds using nucleoside transporters, inhibition of the pentose phosphate pathway and several other enzymatic targets. The mainstay of the work in my group is synthetic medicinal chemistry. Where possible we make extensive use of molecular modeling to guide our synthetic efforts.
